12 Simple Things to Make Prayer More Meaningful:

1. Pay attention to your re-occurring thoughts, that’s usually how the spirit speaks to me.
2. Picture Him standing right.in front.of you.
3. Try & reword repetition. Don’t say’ nourish & strengthen.’ What if instead, you ask that it will be good to your body, or that it won’t make you sick, or that you won’t overeat, (I literally do this ‘cuz I need help, haha) .
4. When possible, kneel. It does make a difference.
5. When possible, pray out loud.
6. Pray in the car & shower – usually the most productive & open conversations are in there when you can “ramble” to Him & have time to think & ponder & listen & not feel rushed.
7. Listen & ponder for a third of the time you took to pray.
8. Specific prayers receive specific answers. Vent. Be honest.
Tell Him when things don’t make sense, or when things suck. My most productive prayers are when I am completely transparent with doubts & questions & concerns.
9. Your night time prayers don’t necessarily have to be right before hopping into bed – it’s ok to do it a little sooner so you’re more conscious for it.
10. When you are too tired, still pray. Saying, ‘Hi, I love you, let’s talk tomorrow,” keeps you in the habit, & shows him you’re thinking of Him.
11. Ben & I sometimes tell Him jokes. Idk what you want me to say about that haha, but I think He likes it & it makes him feel real to us, b/c He is.
12. Ask for help with your prayer. Address Him, then say, “please help me with this prayer.” I find myself saying/thanking/asking for things I didn’t think of until then, then He can help me in the way He sees fit & I feel like I really am “asking in spirit for that which is right.”

  1. I LOVE this! I’m not even LDS, but I love your blog because you’re so authentic. These are such excellent suggestions that I will start using immediately. And you’re right- the car and shower are where my best prayers happen!

  3. This put the biggest smile on my face. I was just talking with a friend yesterday about how to make my prayers more meaningful and to improve how close I am to the Savior. And then I read your top 12 and absolutely loved them!! What great ideas. I forget to be more real in my prayers. I love the idea of listening 1/3 of the time. I also like the idea of praying earlier when I’m more awake. Thank you for being awesome and sharing that awesomeness with the rest of us (including your struggles which are real and also part of being awesome!!). My daughters adore you and you’ve been a big example to them. Thank you, thank you, thank you 🙂

  4. A good reminder, thanks! I think sometimes we rush to say a prayer and forget to ponder, take out repitition, and slow down. It just goes to show that constant reminders about simple diy tasks keeps us on track.

    Thanks!👍🙂

  9. I like this… sounds so much like my daughter. When we’re having family prayers my older daughter talks to our heavenly father like she talking to us and she even jokes sometimes and we just have to laff. I think it’s how you feel and how comfortable you are to talk to God. He’s listening and I’m sure he’s laughing too. Thanks guys

  10. I just finished your book, More Than The Tattooed Mormon. Amazing. Beautifully written. I have followed you on Instagram for a long time, but hadn’t read this book until now. Thank you for your bravery and honesty. It’s hard to believe that people in the church judge your appearance. That makes me sad. What I love is how you handle that though. You are so full of love and kindness even when people don’t deserve that! You have strengthened me and blessed my life. I am going right now to get the rest of your books!!

  11. I have to envision him sitting with me. Holding his hand perhaps or just being there as a friend. I talk to him like a friend whenever I can actually keep my thoughts in line well enough to do so. I tend to ramble and lose track of my thoughts. It’s a bit of a mess when I pray but I am trying.
